A group of young female journalists had a discussion around challenges they encounter in the digital space, how they can overcome these challenges as well as what should be done for female journalists in the country to embrace digital media. Challenges in the Digital Space

Lack of digital skills, there is a number of female journalists who are not aware of how to capitalize on the digital space while others do not know the professional tools present. For instance, many journalists do not know being digitally literate when it comes to understanding social media analytics can get them advertisement deals.

Social and cultural factor, there are a number of inequalities that exists between men and women in accessing digital opportunities, the culture discourages females from participating in developmental issues and getting exposed to the digital space due to the patriarchy system

Cyberbullying, female journalists get harassed on the internet whether it is through sexual threats or insults or their looks or the content that they choose to share.

Misinformation, the fact that anyone with access to the internet has the freedom to share any information without fist getting their facts rights has been a challenge to journalists since it lowers credibility of journalists.

Solutions to overcoming OGBV

It is highly important that journalists are aware of the various options they have at their disposal for reporting Online gender-based violence cases for instance different digital platforms offers an option of reporting offensive comments or account that bully and harass other people.

We need to keep enhancing women participation online by advocating and offering support to women who are victims to OGBV when pressing charges or reporting.

A journalist should go the extra mile in being updated with modern technological changes and advancements by attending trainings, online classes so that they are aware, well informed and are able to navigate in the digital space.

Provision of funds to female journalists with digital literacy will assist them in developing to digital tools and creating opportunities to other aspiring young female journalists as well as bridge the digital inclusion gap in the space.

Embracing the Digital Media

Digital media is important since it serves diverse audiences, educates, improve skills and can make an information reach people immediately and at once. As it is known we’re in the digital era so many opportunities are on digital platforms, so it’s better to embrace it and invest in it for a better career growth.
